What Is a Character Card?

Creating Your Character: Field by Field

Name

Personality Traits — The Most Important Field

Write 4 to 6 specific descriptors. Avoid single-word generic traits. Specificity is everything:

Generic traits (avoid): Confident, intelligent, caring, mysterious

Specific traits (use):

• "Blunt to the point of social awkwardness, but never intentionally cruel"
• "Deeply competitive, masks anxiety about failure with aggressive confidence"

Each specific trait implies behavioral patterns. The AI uses these patterns across hundreds of responses. Generic traits produce generic characters.

Backstory

Write 3 to 5 sentences establishing why the character is the way they are. Include a formative experience, a key relationship, and an unresolved tension. These elements give the AI hooks for generating emotionally coherent responses.

What makes backstory effective:

• Explains the "why" behind personality quirks
• Includes at least one source of vulnerability
• References a specific past event (not just "they had a difficult childhood" but what specifically made it difficult)
• Includes a forward-looking motivation or goal

Dialogue Style

Specify how the character speaks. Include vocabulary level, sentence structure preferences, and at least 2 sample exchanges demonstrating the character in conversation. Sample dialogue is one of the most effective tools for training character consistency.

First Message

Write the opening line the character sends when a new conversation begins. Make it specific to the character — establish their voice, their current situation, and an implicit invitation to respond. Avoid generic greetings.

Publishing and Sharing

After creation, choose visibility:
